The Nobel prize-winning poet Derek Walcott will give an unprecedented Victoria reading and book signing, on the evening of Saturday, November 13, in celebration of the the fourth Pacific Festival of the Book and the Grand Opening of The WELL, a healthy lifestyle centre at 821 Fort Street, Victoria. Walcott, a poet whom the Times of London called “one of the best in the world” is recognized as seminal voice in world literature, known for his exploration of Caribbean culture. Born in Saint Lucia, in the Lesser Antilles, educated in Jamaica and now residing in Trinidad and New York, Derek Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992 for his “poetic oeuvre of great luminosity” and “historical vision.” As a poet and playwright Walcott examines the Carribean’s fusion of Indigenous, African, Asian and European streams in books such as Omeros, a loose reworking of Homer, and his most recent volume, White Egrets, a celebration of the life and language of the West Indies. Victoria audiences will appreciate this rare opportunity to experience a Nobel Laureate whose contribution to world literature over the past sixty years, is indisputable.

The Derek Walcott reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a small reception for ticket holders and the honoured guest. At 8 p.m. the reading will take place and Mr. Walcott will be available to sign books following the reading. Mr. Walcott’s books will be available for sale. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Derek Walcott reading are limited and priced at $45 for early purchase or $60 at the door, if available. Tickets can be purchased at: www.pacificfestivalofthebook.com and www.thewholemartenterprises.com. All other weekend events are available with the nominal purchase of a Festival button.

All Pacific Festival of the Book events will take place at The WELL a healthy choices store and café, featuring books, healthy alternative foods, clothing from sustainable and renewable sources and performance space for writers and musicians. The Well is the vision of poet Hopeton Anderson.
